Crash ‘n’ Burn is a high-speed racer with a focus on spectacular crashes and realistic damage.

With games like the Burnout series selling extremely well, the racing genre is experiencing a need for intense racing games with hardcore crashes.  Enter Eidos, who is currently prepping their crash-focused racing game, Crash ‘n’ Burn.  As the title would suggest, Crash ‘n’ Burn is a racer with a main focus on huge crashes and destruction.  The game features arcade style handling and realistic damage on cars when they crash.  Crash ‘n’ Burn should appeal to the destruction derby crowd by giving them smooth racing mixed with explosive action.

In Crash ‘n’ Burn, you can select from one of four different car types: compact, pickup, sports, or muscle cars.  Once you’ve picked your car type, you can then customize it however you see fit.  You can change nearly every part of the car, from the spoiler and the rims to the paint and decals.  You can paint your car pretty much any color of the spectrum you can think of.  You also have the ability to upgrade your car’s performance by purchasing upgrades as you win races, allowing your vehicle to handle better and go faster.

The racing in Crash ‘n’ Burn is ferocious.  Much of the strategy not only relies on you outracing your opponents, but also wrecking their cars and taking them completely out of the race.  You have a bar in the HUD on the bottom portion of the screen that tells you how much damage you can take, and once that bar is gone, your number is up.  The tracks are fairly short compared to most racing games, yet nearly half of your opponents will be destroyed before most races end.  Sometimes a third of them get taken out before the first lap is even up.  The “kill or be killed” racing style in Crash ‘n’ Burn add a nice dynamic to the gameplay, turning it into a real fight for survival.

Crash ‘n’ Burn will take you to a number of different locations throughout the continental US, from places like Miami and San Francisco to LA, the Bronx and the Redwood Forest in California.  None of the tracks are particularly complex in terms of curves, but the game has other ways of adding challenge to the courses.  As cars are wrecked and totaled, the wreckage is not removed from the track at all, meaning that halfway into a race the course can be peppered in tons of debris and wreckage.  The courses become more and more challenging as a result, as you have to navigate through wrecked cars, fires and oil spills to not crash.

The physics in Crash ‘n’ Burn have an over exaggerated feel to them, which adds to its appeal.  For example, if you hit a dirt clump on the track the wrong way, then your car will be sent soaring into the air, flipping like a coin.  The result looks very cool, and most gamers will be content looking for new ways to wreck their cars just to watch the chaos that ensues.  Crash ‘n’ Burn handles like any number of arcade racers, meaning that it should be easy for most gamers to pick up and get into without getting too lost in meticulous simulation.  However, the flip side of that coin means that race fans who want something with the depth of Project Gotham Racing will be disappointed.

Graphically, Crash ‘n’ Burn is shaping up to be a great looking game.  The tracks have a nice amount of detail to them, including realistic looking textures and cool lighting effects.  The car models have a very glossy almost cartoony appearance, but they take on realistic looking damage as they get beat up through the races.  The framerates are also shaping up quite nicely, staying smooth with only minor hiccups when there are a lot of cars on the screen.

The audio in Crash ‘n’ Burn is very good, with some appropriately over the top announcing and a heavy metal/punk soundtrack.  The sound in the build was very crisp and clear, and the soundtrack fit in nicely with the overall mood of the game.

If all proceeds as planned, then Crash ‘n’ Burn could be a chaotic arcade racing game to look out for when it is released next month.  Stay tuned for more on this game, including how the multiplayer features fare, as it develops.
